This is exactly the point I was trying to make - NOT belittle US collegiate hockey players. The NCAA system of developping athletes produces ethics problems. The athletes take up seats in classes (the ones they actually attend) while people like your friend get the shaft. Then, look at the attitude eminating from NBA and NFL pros that were stroked and pampered through their college years. Compare that to NHL players. While far from perfect, I think the Major Junior leagues in hockey are the best way for athletes to be prepared for pro leagues. Those that dont make it can always go back to school after they have had their shot, and the universities are no worse for the wear.

In article , Brenda_Knights@stubbs.woodsworth.utoronto.ca (Brenda Knights) says: Condolences on the demise of your team. I cannot figure out what the hell Keenan is doing either. Im still mystified over the Shanahan deal myself. Of all the players to dump ... he is the one guy who really can carry a team so I cannot forsee much success without him. (uninformed whimpering snipped) Joseph was one amazing goalie ..I should not say was that implies that he is dead or unable to play anymore. The series versus the Leafs a couple of years ago ... Wow!! 1992, I think. (more stuff snipped) Brenda Brenda: Quit judging the team (and its former goaltender) by their performances one to three years ago.....hockey careers come and go in that amount of time in the NHL. If you think Shanahan can carry a team you are *sadly* mistaken, and since that spectacular run in the playoffs in 1993 (not 92), Joseph has NOT been the same in goal. Both players have questionable work et.

Another point to be noted in his skipping back to back games was that if the second game was at home, he would play the home game to avoid travel. And more importantly it is the folks in Pittsburgh who are paying his salary and want to see him play on home ice. Nothing wrong with that. As for his comments on officiating, I dont see anything wrong with that. Hockey officiating is by far the most inconsistent of any major sport and if anybody can do something to change it, it is the superstars who must voice their opinion. Lemieux summed up the NHL best in his garage league quote. Note that for most Lemieux haters, when Gretzky complains, he does not whine but is the sports ambassador but when Mario does it, it is whining and he has no class. Seriously, how many players stay with.
